Why Your Gutter Guards Should Be Fire Resistant

Why Your Gutter Guards Should Be Fire Resistant

The Nation’s Most Trusted Gutter Guard™ is a promise Gutterglove doesn’t take lightly. As fire safety becomes increasingly important, Gutterglove wants to ensure its products are compliant with Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Fire Areas, starting with the areas that are most regulated.

A circular badge features the words WILDLAND URBAN INTERFACE COMPLIANT around the edge, WUI COMPLIANT in the center, and a flame icon above a red G at the bottom, representing a gutter guard manufacturer using advanced V-Bend Technology.

WUI is the zone of transition between unoccupied land and human development according to the United States Fire Administration (USFA). It is the area where structures and other human development meet or intermingle with undeveloped wildland or vegetative fuels. Communities adjacent to and surrounded by wildland are at varying degrees of risk from wildfires.

A black circle with red and gray rings features a white house icon in the center. Inside the house, a black flame symbolizes fire safety or home fire protection, highlighting innovation often seen in gutter guard manufacturer designs.

Although western America has some of the highest risks for WUI fires, more than 46 million residences are still at risk throughout the country and the WUI areas continue to grow by approximately 2 million acres per year, according to the USFA. States with high-risk WUI areas are adopting fire prevention policies for gutter systems on new construction within the area at risk.

“Being from California, we know the importance of producing fire-safe materials for residential exteriors, and with the recent rise in fire-related disasters, Gutterglove felt we needed to take the steps to ensure our products were top-notch,” said CEO Matt Smith.

After working with product certification consultants and participating in thorough materials audits, Gutterglove products are officially WUI Fire Area compliant per the California Fire Department.

California Residential Code enforces roofs are free of leaves, needles, and/or dead vegetation and all roof gutters have debris guards installed. (CRC R337.5.4)

The basic requirement is that the exterior of the structure be ignition-resistant and be able to resist the entry of flying embers and fire radiation during a wildfire.

According to California Building Code Chapter 7A, Roof Gutters 705A.4, “Roof gutters shall be provided with the means of preventing the accumulation of leaves and debris in the gutter.”
